Black Communities Organize Resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 required Northern citizens to assist in capturing freedom-seekers. Black communities responded with immediate organized resistance: vigilance committees expanded in Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Cincinnati; emigration to Canada accelerated (an estimated 3,000–5,000 Black Americans left within months); and several high-profile rescues — including Shadrach Minkins (1851) and the Christiana Resistance (1851) — demonstrated active collective defiance.
