The merged Frederick Douglass' Paper published Black intellectual voices including James McCune Smith, William J. Watkins, and Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Its 4,000 subscribers spanned the US, Canada, and Britain. Smith's regular column made it the premier venue for Black statistical and political analysis in the antebellum era.
