North Star Renamed Frederick Douglass' Paper

Frederick Douglass merged The North Star with Gerrit Smith's Liberty Party Paper to create Frederick Douglass' Paper, published in Rochester until 1860. The merger reflected Douglass's evolving view that the Constitution could be an anti-slavery document — a break with William Lloyd Garrison. The paper reached approximately 4,000 subscribers across the US, Canada, and Britain and published leading Black intellectual voices of the era.
