Martin Delany Publishes 'The Condition, Elevation, Emigration' — Black Nationalism Defined
Martin R. Delany published 'The Condition, Elevation, Emigration, and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States' — the founding text of Black nationalist thought in America. Delany argued Black people could never achieve equality in the US and should seek their own nation. He later explored emigration to West Africa and Canada. Frederick Douglass called him 'one of the most self-made men in America.'
