Black Intellectuals Both Embrace and Critique Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel — which sold 300,000 copies in its first year — drew complex responses from Black intellectuals. Frederick Douglass praised its impact. Martin Delany criticized its colonizationist ending, which sent Black characters to Liberia rather than claiming American citizenship. The debate crystallized the integration vs. emigration fault line in Black political thought and spurred Black authors to write their own counter-narratives.
