James McCune Smith Publishes Statistical Refutation of Scientific Racism
Dr. James McCune Smith published a series of statistical analyses — including 'Influence of Climate on Longevity' and essays in Frederick Douglass' Paper — systematically demolishing Samuel Morton's and Josiah Nott's 'scientific' claims of Black inferiority using their own census data against them. Smith showed methodological fraud in pro-slavery science, becoming the first Black American to produce peer-quality statistical social science.
