Robert S. Duncanson Emerges as Leading Black American Painter

Cincinnati-based Robert S. Duncanson became the first internationally recognized Black American painter, leading in the Hudson River School tradition. His 'Blue Hole, Little Miami River' (1851) was exhibited widely. His later 'Land of the Lotus Eaters' was purchased by the King of Sweden, demonstrating Black artistic excellence reaching the highest levels of Western art.
