Philadelphia Vigilance Committee Aids Hundreds Under Still's Leadership

By 1855 the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, led by William Still, was aiding an average of 60 freedom-seekers per month. Still's meticulous records documented their origins, methods of escape, and new identities. He reunited families, including famously discovering that Peter Still — a man he was assisting — was his own long-lost brother. His records became the most comprehensive documentation of the Underground Railroad.
