Black Jockeys Systematically Excluded from Major Horse Racing

By the mid-1900s, Black jockeys who had dominated American horse racing — winning 15 of the first 28 Kentucky Derbies — were effectively barred from major tracks through exclusion from jockey clubs and physical intimidation, erasing a proud tradition of Black equestrian excellence.
