Howard Drew Competes in 1912 Olympics as Leading Black Sprinter
Howard Porter Drew of Springfield, Massachusetts, one of the fastest sprinters of the era, competed in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, becoming one of the first Black American track stars of the Olympic era. Drew was considered by many contemporaries to be the fastest man in the world, though injuries affected his Olympic performance. He helped establish Black excellence in sprinting decades before Jesse Owens.
