Howard Drew Recognized as World's Fastest Human at 1912 Olympics
Howard Porter Drew of Springfield, Massachusetts, one of the fastest sprinters of the era, qualified for and competed in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, becoming one of the first Black American track stars of the Olympic era. Drew was considered by many contemporaries to be the fastest man in the world, though injuries affected his Olympic performance. He helped establish Black excellence in sprinting decades before Jesse Owens.
