Spelman Seminary Develops Toward College Status

Spelman Seminary in Atlanta, founded in 1881 to educate Black women, developed its collegiate curriculum significantly in the 1910s, building toward formal college status. As one of the only institutions providing rigorous higher education to Black women in the South, Spelman trained generations of teachers, nurses, and community leaders who shaped Black life across the region.
