Georgia Douglas Johnson Begins Publishing Poetry

Georgia Douglas Johnson began publishing poetry in The Crisis and other Black publications in the mid-1910s, emerging as one of the leading Black women poets of the Harlem Renaissance era. Her 1918 collection 'The Heart of a Woman' became the first major poetry collection published by a Black woman in the twentieth century, exploring themes of womanhood, race, and sorrow.
