Alice Dunbar-Nelson Teaches and Organizes in Delaware

Alice Dunbar-Nelson, widow of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar and an accomplished poet, essayist, and short story writer in her own right, taught in Delaware public schools while continuing to write and organize politically throughout the 1910s. Her literary work, activism for Black women's suffrage, and journalism for Black newspapers made her a significant if often overlooked figure in Black cultural and political life.
