Black Churches Establish Northern Congregations to Serve Migrants

As the Great Migration accelerated, Black Baptist and Methodist churches established new congregations in Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York, and other Northern cities to serve incoming Southern migrants. Churches served as social welfare institutions, employment centers, and community anchors, making them central to the adjustment of millions of Black migrants to Northern urban life throughout the decade.
