Bishop Henry McNeal Turner Dies, Leaving Pan-Africanist Legacy
Bishop Henry McNeal Turner of the AME Church, the leading Black emigrationist and Pan-Africanist voice of the late nineteenth century, died on May 8, 1915. Turner had spent decades arguing that Black Americans could never achieve true equality in the United States and should emigrate to Africa. His ideas profoundly influenced Marcus Garvey's movement and subsequent Pan-Africanist thought.
