NAACP Establishes Spingarn Medal for Black Achievement

NAACP Chairman Joel Spingarn established the Spingarn Medal in 1915 as an annual award to the Black American who had made the most distinguished achievement in any field. The first medal was awarded to scientist Ernest Everett Just. The award became one of the most prestigious honors in Black America and highlighted excellence across science, arts, literature, and public service.
