Chicago Defender Launches Migration Campaign to Draw Southern Blacks North
The Chicago Defender, under editor Robert S. Abbott, ran sustained editorial campaigns urging southern Black Americans to migrate north for better wages and freedom from racial violence. The Defender was smuggled into the Deep South by Pullman porters and read aloud in churches, playing a documented role in accelerating the Great Migration. Its circulation reached nearly 100,000 by 1916.
