Independent Black Baseball Teams Thrive Before Negro Leagues

Dozens of independent Black professional baseball teams competed across the country in the 1910s, including the Indianapolis ABCs, the Lincoln Giants, and the Cuban X-Giants. Their success and the organizational challenge of booking games drove Rube Foster toward creating the formal Negro National League structure he would establish in 1920.
