James P. Johnson Develops Stride Piano Style in New York
James P. Johnson, working in New York's rent party and club circuit, developed and refined stride piano, an evolved form of ragtime characterized by the left hand's alternation between bass notes and midrange chords. Johnson became the undisputed master of stride piano and his compositions and recordings influenced virtually every subsequent jazz pianist including Fats Waller and Duke Ellington.
