Independent Black Baseball Teams Thrive Before Negro Leagues

Dozens of independent Black professional baseball teams competed across the country in the 1910s, including the Indianapolis ABCs, the Lincoln Giants, and the Cuban X-Giants, creating a thriving baseball culture that demonstrated the market for organized Black professional sports. Their success and the organizational challenge of booking games drove Rube Foster toward creating a formal league structure.
