Storefront Churches Proliferate in Northern Black Communities

As hundreds of thousands of Black Southern migrants settled in Northern industrial cities during the Great Migration, storefront churches proliferated in Black urban neighborhoods. Often founded by individual preachers from Southern states, these small congregations preserved Southern Black religious culture and community bonds while adapting to urban industrial life.
