First Jazz Records Released While Black Originators Are Overlooked

When the white Original Dixieland Jass Band made the first commercially released jazz recordings in 1917, Black musicians who had created the genre were not offered recording contracts. Black New Orleans musicians including King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, and Jelly Roll Morton had developed the style being recorded. The episode established a pattern of white artists receiving commercial benefits from Black musical innovation.
