National Medical Association Strengthens as AMA Excludes Black Doctors

As the American Medical Association maintained racial exclusion policies that barred Black physicians from membership and hospital privileges, the National Medical Association, founded in 1895, grew stronger as the professional home for Black doctors. Black physicians built their own hospital network, medical schools at Howard and Meharry, and professional infrastructure entirely separate from white medical institutions.
