Black Women Enter Industrial Workforce During World War I

World War I labor shortages opened industrial jobs to Black women for the first time, allowing them to leave domestic service for higher-paying factory work in meatpacking, garment manufacturing, and other industries. Though they faced discrimination in wages and conditions and were largely displaced after the war, their entry into industrial work represented a significant economic shift.
