Charles Gilpin Builds Stage Career with Lafayette Players

Charles Gilpin, one of the leading Black stage actors of the era, performed with the Lafayette Players in Harlem and other Black theater companies throughout the 1910s, developing the craft that would lead to his landmark 1920 performance in Eugene O'Neill's 'The Emperor Jones.' Gilpin was among the first Black actors to achieve serious dramatic recognition in American theater.
