Hubert Harrison Founds Liberty League of Negro Americans
Hubert Harrison, the Virgin Islands-born intellectual known as the father of Harlem radicalism, founded the Liberty League of Negro Americans in 1917, one of the earliest Black political organizations to advocate race consciousness and militant demands for political and economic rights. Harrison's ideas influenced both Marcus Garvey and A. Philip Randolph and his soapbox oratory made him one of Harlem's most important public intellectuals.
