King Oliver Leads Top Jazz Band in New Orleans

Joe 'King' Oliver had established himself as the leading cornetist and bandleader in New Orleans by 1917, mentoring the young Louis Armstrong and defining the New Orleans jazz style. When New Orleans authorities closed Storyville, the city's entertainment district, Oliver and many other musicians began migrating north, carrying jazz to Chicago and eventually New York.
