National Medical Association Strengthens as AMA Excludes Black Doctors

As the American Medical Association maintained racial exclusion policies that barred Black physicians from membership and hospital privileges, the National Medical Association grew stronger as the professional home for Black doctors. Black physicians built their own hospital network and medical schools at Howard and Meharry, creating a medical infrastructure entirely separate from white institutions.
