Black Scholars Work to Document and Preserve Spirituals

Throughout the 1910s, Black scholars and musicians worked to document and preserve the Negro spiritual tradition, building on the Fisk Jubilee Singers' earlier work. R. Nathaniel Dett at Hampton Institute and other Black music educators published collections and arrangements of spirituals, arguing for their recognition as serious art music and an essential part of American cultural heritage.
