New York Age and Other Black Papers Compete with Chicago Defender

The New York Age, one of the oldest Black newspapers in the country and previously associated with Booker T. Washington's political machine, competed with the increasingly militant Chicago Defender and The Crisis for Black readership. The competition among Black newspapers drove more assertive coverage of racial violence and political issues, reflecting the shifting mood in Black America.
