Closure of Storyville Spurs Jazz Musicians' Migration North

When the U.S. Navy pressured New Orleans to close Storyville, its famous entertainment district, in November 1917, many of the musicians who had developed jazz in its clubs and brothels moved north to Chicago, Kansas City, and New York. This dispersal was a critical turning point in the nationalization of jazz and the spread of New Orleans musical innovations across America.
