Three Plays for a Negro Theatre Premieres
Three short plays by Ridgely Torrence were produced by Emilie Hapgood in New York in 1917 with an all-Black cast, representing a significant moment in American theater. The production, which featured serious dramatic roles for Black performers, was praised by critics and ran on Broadway, becoming an early model for dignified Black dramatic representation outside of minstrelsy.
