Charles Gilpin Stars in 'The Emperor Jones' on Broadway
In November 1920, Charles Gilpin starred as Brutus Jones in Eugene O'Neill's 'The Emperor Jones' at the Provincetown Playhouse, becoming one of the first Black actors to play a lead dramatic role on Broadway. His performance was celebrated as transformative by critics across the political spectrum, and Gilpin received the Drama League Award—although the organization briefly rescinded the dinner invitation due to his race before public outcry reversed the decision. His performance opened a door for Paul Robeson and subsequent Black dramatic actors.
