NAACP Launches National Anti-Lynching Campaign

Under James Weldon Johnson's executive leadership beginning in 1920, the NAACP mounted its most systematic national anti-lynching campaign, employing Walter White as an undercover investigator, producing detailed reports on racial violence, lobbying Congress through mass petition drives, and organizing the silent protest marches that had begun in 1917. The campaign directly produced the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, which passed the House in 1922 before being filibustered in the Senate.
