Carter Woodson Founds Associated Publishers, a Black Academic Press

In 1921, Carter G. Woodson established Associated Publishers in Washington, D.C.—a Black-owned academic press to publish books on African American history that white commercial publishers refused to issue. Associated Publishers produced dozens of scholarly and popular works, creating an independent channel for Black intellectual production at a time when the segregated academy excluded Black scholarship.
