Augusta Savage Enrolls at Cooper Union, Begins Sculpting Career

Augusta Savage enrolled in the four-year sculpture course at Cooper Union in New York City in 1921, where her instructors quickly waived prerequisite classes due to her exceptional talent. She sculpted busts of W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey during her studies, establishing herself as one of the foremost sculptors of the Harlem Renaissance and the first major Black woman sculptor to gain national recognition.
