Charles Gilpin Stars as First Black Lead in a Broadway Drama

In November 1920, Charles Gilpin starred as Brutus Jones in Eugene O'Neill's 'The Emperor Jones' at the Provincetown Playhouse, becoming one of the first Black actors to play a lead dramatic role on Broadway. His performance received the Drama League Award, although the organization initially rescinded the dinner invitation due to his race before public outcry reversed the decision. His performance opened a door for Paul Robeson.
