Oscar Micheaux Directs 'Birthright'

Oscar Micheaux directed 'Birthright' in 1924, an adaptation of white novelist T.S. Stribling's 1922 novel reimagined through a Black lens. The film illustrated Micheaux's practice of adapting mainstream literary material to address Black American experiences and concerns, contributing to a decade in which he produced roughly one feature per year for Black theater circuits.
