Zora Neale Hurston Arrives in Harlem, Wins Opportunity Award, Enters Barnard

In January 1925, Zora Neale Hurston arrived in New York City and immediately became a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance. That year she won a scholarship to Barnard College, where she studied anthropology under Franz Boas—one of the first Black women to attend the college. Her Opportunity magazine literary award for 'Spunk' launched her literary reputation.
