During the Depression, Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church under Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Sr. ran one of the largest community relief operations in New York, distributing food, clothing, and emergency aid to thousands of unemployed Black New Yorkers while Powell preached social gospel activism.
