Duke Ellington's Orchestra Expands to Full Concert Band Format

Ellington expanded his orchestra to a full fourteen-piece ensemble in the early 1930s, developing the unique instrumental voices — Johnny Hodges's alto saxophone, Cootie Williams's wah-wah trumpet, Harry Carney's baritone saxophone — that made Ellington's band sound like no other in the world.
