Langston Hughes Publishes Not Without Laughter

Hughes's debut novel won the Harmon Gold Medal for Literature and portrayed Black Midwestern working-class life with warmth and realism. It remains a foundational work of African American literature and established Hughes as a major voice in fiction as well as poetry.
