Nation of Islam Founded in Detroit

Wallace Fard Muhammad founded the Nation of Islam in Detroit's Black community, offering a radical theology of Black dignity, self-sufficiency, and separation as an alternative to the racial degradation of American society. The movement grew steadily through the Depression and would become a major force in Black life by mid-century.
