Zora Neale Hurston Conducts Anthropological Fieldwork in the Deep South

Working under Franz Boas at Columbia and funded by patron Charlotte Osgood Mason, Hurston conducted extensive fieldwork collecting Black folklore, music, and hoodoo practices in Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana. Her notes and recordings formed the basis of Mules and Men (1935) and profoundly influenced American folklore studies.
