Oscar Micheaux Releases The Exile, First Black Sound Feature Film

Micheaux's The Exile became the first full-length sound feature film produced by an African American director, demonstrating that the independent Black cinema he had pioneered since 1919 could survive the transition to talking pictures. The film addressed themes of racial identity, class, and Black ambition.
