Sterling Brown Publishes Southern Road

Brown's debut poetry collection broke sharply from genteel Harlem Renaissance verse by rooting itself in Black Southern vernacular, blues forms, and folk speech. Critics consider it among the most significant volumes of African American poetry of the twentieth century.
