Tuskegee Syphilis Study Begins Under US Public Health Service

The US Public Health Service began a forty-year study in Macon County, Alabama, deliberately withholding treatment from nearly 400 Black men with syphilis without their informed consent. The study, which continued until exposed in 1972, was a profound violation of medical ethics and caused lasting distrust of medical institutions in Black communities.
