National Negro Congress Organized

The National Negro Congress convened in Chicago in February 1936 with over 800 delegates representing 585 organizations, forming a coalition of labor, civil rights, and community groups that represented the broadest front of Black political organizing since Reconstruction. A. Philip Randolph served as its first president.
