Arna Bontemps Publishes Black Thunder

Bontemps's historical novel about Gabriel Prosser's 1800 slave rebellion was the first major African American historical novel to treat slave resistance with heroic dignity. It influenced the wave of Black historical fiction that followed and was rediscovered as a landmark in the 1960s.
